Fred H. Stein, of Wapwallopen, died on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Nuangola, he was the son of the late Fred M. and Nellie Kraska Stein and was a graduate of Newport Township High School, Wanamie, Class of 1948. Fred's yearbook quoted him as, “conscientious and usually volunteering first for any task.” Throughout his life he was always willing to help anyone in need, always with his signature smile.
He joined the Army Reserve in January, 1952 serving for 2 years and was an active member of the Mountain Top American Legion Post 781. Fred worked a short time at Weis Potato Chip in Berwick before starting his career at RCA in Mountain Top, working there until his retirement in 1989.
Next to his family, his lifelong love was hunting and he was known by his hunting friends as, “One Shot Fred,” being an expert marksman. Over the years, his hunting adventures took him to Montana for elk and Canada for moose. He was also able to take his dream trips to Africa in 1991 and Australia in 1999.
He was preceded in death by his son, brother, mother, father and infant sister.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Christine Gottstein Stein, children, Patricia (Dan) Fine of Dorrance, Laurel (Stewart) Davis of West Virginia, Suzanne (William) Guzzi of Slocum, Angela (Randy) Miller of Slocum, Richard (Karen) Stein of Slocum; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren .
Memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 6:00 pm from the Desiderio-Lehman Funeral and Cremation, 436 S. Mountain Blvd. Mountain Top.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm Saturday until time of service.
