JOHN HENRY, SR. Obituary


John Mason Henry, Sr. 97, of Mountain Top, died on Saturday, August 13, 2022, in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.


Born in Dorrance, July 16, 1925, he was the son of Harold Martin and Christine Stein Henry. John served his country proudly in the United States Navy, during World War II on the USS Intrepid, surviving many kamikaze and torpedo attacks.  He was involved in many battles of the South Pacific and was a gunner loading powder for the 5 inch anti aircraft gun.. John was the recipient of the American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 6 stars and the Philippine Liberation medal with 2 stars. He was a member of Slocum VFW Post 7918;  a 76 conservative year member of Dorrance Twp. American Legion Post 0288; member of Masonic Lodge and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mountain Top. John worked for Acme Markets, Forty Fort, driving tractor trailers.  John enjoyed gardening, growing pumpkins, country music and going to garage sales.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Veronica, siblings, Conrad Miles Henry, Harold Martin Henry, James Victor Henry, Glenmore Harry Henry, Luther Henry, Arthur Charles Henry, Gertrude Lopresti, Bessie Drasher, Alice Henry and Robert Henry.

 
He is survived by his children, John Henry Jr. (Anne) of Mountain Top; Eileen Hoyson (Jim) of Shavertown, Michael Henry of Mountain Top; 4 grandchildren, Katharine Veronica Henry; Christine Anne (Richard) Smith; Lindsey Mary (Cody) Bruns, Michael George (Kaitlin) Henry; great grandson, Lucas Henry; brother, Edward Clarence Henry of Michigan and many nieces and nephews.


Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 11:00 am from the Desiderio-Lehman Funeral and Cremation, 436 S. Mountain Blvd. Mountain Top with Pastor Michelle Kaufman officiating. Interment will follow in Alberts Cemetery, Mountain Top.


Friends are invited to join the family for a visitation on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 from 5 to 7 pm and on Thursday, from 10:00 am until time of service.


Family would like to thank Dr. Wolanin, Independent Life Home Health, Kindred Home Health and all his caregivers for the excellent compassionate care to John.. Thanks to all his friends and extended family at the coffee club.
