JOHN ZAWATSKY Obituary

John J. Zawatsky

 

Born in Hazleton, PA April 29, 1934 John Zawatsky passed away November 24, 2022 at 3:45pm in Allied Services Hospice, Wilkes Barre, Pa. John was employed for 34 years by the Hancock Central School District as a health and physical education teacher and athletic director until retiring in 1995.

He was the son of Joseph and Anna Zawatsky of Jeddo and was the faithful husband of 63 years to his wife Marie Adam’s Zawatsky.

John is survived by his wife Marie Zawatsky of Mountain Top, a sister Kathy Hamilton of Hershey and brother Joe Zawatsky of Jeddo.

He was preceded in death by his sister Josephine Reiman Culpepper, VA and two brothers Vince Zawatsky Hazleton, PA and Bernard Zawatsky Freeland, PA.

He is also survived by his son John Zawatsky Jr. of Faber VA, daughter Sharon of White Haven PA, son Joe Zawatsky of Bozeman MT, Grandchildren Adam Fazzini of Boston MA, John Fazzini of Penn Lake, PA and Christopher Fazzini of Mountain Top, PA.

John served in the U.S. Navy as an aerographer’s mate third class on the USS Essex and USS Independence from 1957-1960. He will always be remembered as a standout baseball player for the Jeddo Stars and eventually his stretch in the pros with Cleveland. He also coached the Hancock Central High School varsity baseball team for 30 years and was selected to the New York State Section 4 Sports Hall of Fame. In recognition of his achievements the Hancock baseball field was named the John Zawatsky Field.

John was an avid New York Yankees fan, loved the outdoors and was a caring compassionate and loving father and grandfather who loved and cherished every moment he spent with family.

Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 9:30 am from the Desiderio-Lehman Funeral and Cremation, 436 S. Mountain Blvd. Mountain Top with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Judes Catholic Church, 420 South Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top, PA. A Christian Burial will be held at the Calvary Cemetery, 49 South Hunter Highway Drums, PA.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Allied Services Wilkes-Barre Hospice Center c/o Allied Services Foundation 100 Abington Executive Park Clark Summit, PA 18411.
