James M. Cornelius Jr.

James Milton Cornelius, aged 98, lifelong resident of Mountain Top, passed away August 4, 2026 peacefully in his family home.

Born on June 4, 1928, to Aline Yocum Cornelius, James led a life full of dedication, service, and community involvement. James graduated from Fairview High School in 1945. Afterward, he worked at his family business, Aline’s Store, and for the Central New Jersey Rail Road. His career was briefly interrupted when he was called to serve during the Korean War, where he served honorably as a Sergeant in the Army, attached to Headquarters Detachment, 67th Ordnance Battalion. Upon returning home, James continued his education at Wilkes College in 1959, earning a bachelor's of Art degree in Mathematics. He returned to his roles in the family business and at the railroad until he transitioned to employment at RCA in Mountain Top, where he worked diligently until his retirement.

At the young age of 16, James became involved with the Mountain Top Hose Company, where he served as secretary and later treasurer, remaining a lifelong member. His passion for railroads led him to join the Lackawanna Wyoming Valley Railway Historical Society Chapter NRHS. Together with his wife, they traveled yearly to various railroad events across the country.

An active member of the Mountain Top Historical Society he was always willing to share a past story or dig into his treasure trove of pictures and slides. A young James can be found pictured on the cover of the local history book titled “Mountain Top Pennsylvania”. James was also deeply involved in his faith communities, attending the First Baptist Church of Kingston and Second Welsh Congregational Church. Additionally, he was a proud member of 36 years to the American Legion Post 781.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Geraldine Nobel Cornelius.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his children Jennifer (David) Gruber, Jon Cornelius (Jill Jones), Mary Cornelius (Allen Estes), Daniel (Tracy) Cornelius, Jessica (Gene) Zellman, and Edward (Robin) Cornelius. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his caretakers, Jessica, Brenda, and Debbie, who shared many of James's life stories and Oreo cookies with him. They would also like to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their exceptional care and compassion.

Services will be held at Desiderio-Lehman Funeral and Cremation 436 South Mountain Blvd Mountain Top, PA Sunday August 16, 2026 2-4pm, allowing loved ones to honor James's memory in a personal and meaningful way.
