Laverne Schmid Obituary

Laverne C. Schmid, 90, long time resident of Slocum Twp, passed away on April 23, 2026, at Allied Hospice on South Meade Street, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on July 13, 1935, in Alden, she was the daughter of the late John and Celia (Buczek) Kaminski. Laverne was a graduate of Newport High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from the Nesbitt School of Nursing. She dedicated her professional life to caring for others as a registered nurse at Berwick Hospital, where she also formed many lifelong friendships.

Laverne’s compassion extended far beyond her career. While she was devoted to her patients, her greatest joy was caring for her family. She was truly a “supermom”, always putting her loved ones first. She found great happiness working with her husband Joe to build a warm and welcoming home. They spent time together baking, cooking, gardening, traveling and in later years attending their grandchildren’s sporting events, cheering them on with pride.  On Saturdays she could often be found doing the same for her beloved Nittany Lion football team.

In recent years, she was a resident of Providence Place Senior Living, Drums where she made many dear friends and truly enjoyed the sense of community and fellowship.

A woman of deep faith, Laverne was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church in Dorrance. She and her husband, Joe, consistently attended Mass together and lived their lives by their shared Catholic values.

Laverne will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to many.

She is survived by her children: Joseph Schmid and his wife, Charlene, of Shavertown; David Schmid and his wife, Eileen, of Dover, Delaware; Steven Schmid and his wife, Andrea, of Slocum Township; and Diane Hochreiter and her husband, Rich, of Mountain Top. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; her brothers, Terrance (Faith) Kaminski and Edward (Linda) Kaminski; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Joseph Schmid; and her siblings, Chesterine Evancho, Marlene Morgan, and John “Jackie” Kaminski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 11:30 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 3529 St. Mary’s Road, Wapwallopen. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Dorrance, or Allied Hospice, South Meade Street.

Laverne’s legacy of love, faith, and compassion will live on in all who knew her.
